-A giant in the National Labour Movement
-vital contribution to the development of organized labour
-glorious chapter in the history of workers' struggles

''Jamaica Nice and Clean"
A national campaign to create and sustain a clean
environment in our country and to make Jamaica what nature
intended - "A Land of Beauty"
While there have been previous efforts the difference
this time around is - sustainability.
It must begin with every citizen taking personal
responsibility for the environment in which we live
and work.

We'll be allocating $1billion from property taxes to the
National Solid Waste Management Authority to
improve our capacity to collect and dispose of solid
waste.
Cabinet has already voted the funds for:
• the acquisition of (20) twenty large new garbage
compactors
• repairs to the existing fleet
• five crane trucks to remove derelict vehicles from our
roads

We Must Stop:
• defacing our walls with graffiti
• throwing our garbage anywhere and everywhere
• vending illegally on our streets

Our loan agreement with the IDB will facilitate the
continuing development of Jamaica's first sanitary
landfill at Riverton City as well as improvement to the
other waste disposal sites at:
• Retirement - Mo. Bay
• Haddon - St. Ann
• Martin's Hill - St. Mary

We are refurbishing our National and Municipal Parks:
• Mandela Park which was our Labour Day Project of
1995 and which has been maintained satisfactorily
• National Heroes Park which is being refurbished and
the first phase is to be completed in October 2002
• Hope Gardens - the popular playground for kids,
location for weddings and fun day activities is being
restored to its former beauty as a project of the
Ministries of Agriculture and Land and Environment

Regular Cleaning of our Drains and Gullies
The fees paid for motor vehicle licences which go into the
Parochial Revenue Fund is being allocated to this activity

Partnership with the Private Sector
Our Private Sector Companies and state corporations are
making their contribution by beautifying and maintaining
public areas, verges and median strips. Some fine examples
worthy of emulation are:
• Bank of Jamaica which has adopted the mini
park adjacent to the Bank in Downtown Kingston
• Bank of Nova Scotia which has adopted the
public area adjacent to the bank on King Street,
Kingston

• The Bog Walk Roundabout adopted by an
exemplary citizen Mr. Eric Jaggon of Bog Walk
• The Rosemount Roundabout at Linstead
bypass adopted by the citizens of Rosemount
and spearheaded by Mrs. Barbara Maragh
• Cool Oasis Ltd. which has made a special effort
to landscape its service stations islandwide
• L.G. 's Service Station which has made such a
positive environmental impact on Constant Spring
Road and
• The National Housing Trust which will soon be
giving us Emancipation Park
UWI LIBRARIES
Inter-School Competition to be launched this year to
encourage:
• Beautification of schools as a vehicle for developing
and inculcating in the young minds the value of a
"Nice and Clean" community
Enforcement Is the Key
No matter how much we invest, to keep ''Jamaica Nice and
Clean" will require firm and consistent enforcement of
municipal laws

In August we will be celebrating our 40th year of
Independence.
Let us do so in a "Nice and Clean Ja111aica and Keep it
Clean."
