Once again, Jamaicans will have an opportunity to
• demonstrate love of country, pride in our heritage, while
making a practical contribution to preserving the integrity of
our environment.
V
Over the years, Labour Day activities have created permanent
landmarks, which remind us of the value and worth of
voluntary efforts.

This year, the National Labour Day Committee proposes to
initiate, with the launching of Labour Day, an island-wide
clean-up campaign, which will focus on community renewal
and sanitation.
Labour Day therefore will be a high point in this clean up,
which will continue to Independence, as we prepare to
welcome our Jamaicans living overseas as well as other visitors
for the Millennium Homecoming.
Technical direction and co-ordination for this clean-up will be
provided by the Natural Solid Waste Management, with
assistance from the Public Works Department and the Parish
Councils .

communities islandwide for this urgent national task.
In preparation for the clean-up work has already begun at the
dump sites at Riverton City and Retirement in Montego Bay to

THE NATIONAL PROJECT - TRENCH TOWN CULTURE
YARD
The Trench Town Development Association, TTDA, was
formed to facilitate the redevelopment of Trench Town and
eventually its surrounding communities.
The Trench Town Culture Yard, represents the first project
undertaken by the TTDA. Trench Town's legacy, as the
birthplace and residence of many of Jamaica's great musicians,
will be the catalyst for its development.

The strategy for the redevelopment of Trench Town will
follow the principle of 'infill development'.
This strategy specifically focuses on developing vacant and
available lands. The type of development specific to each site,
is implemented based on what the particular site and its
surroundings require, to create a meaningful impact .
It is expected that these interventions will stimulate the
immediate context and provide some form of sustainable
activity.

LABOUR DAY ACTIVITIES
This year, Labour Day will be launched from the Trench Town
Culture Yard which will also be the venue for the national
project. The theme "One Love ... One Clean Community" is
particularly apt, in the year when we celebrate Bob Marley's
unprecedented national and international recognition .
Labour Day activities will contribute to the restoration of the
Hon. Robert Nesta Marley's home community and its
environs, which encompasses the Vin Lawrence Park
immediately facing the Culture Yard.
The creation of a green area will be facilitated by the laying of
topsoil, as well as by the planting of grass in the park, and on
the football field, as well as the planting of poui and poinciana
tress along the perimeter fence.

THE NATIONAL LABOUR MOVEMENT
While the entire nation is being mobilized for community
renewal, the Labour Day Committee will also salute the
workers of Jamaica and implement a programme of public
education on the whole question of the history of the Jamaica
Labour Movement, with specific reference to its struggles and
achievements .
May I urge everyone to 'pitch in' so that we can give Jamaica
a new face for the year 2000 and beyond
