F . H . Bowen . Dr . Taylor was the first Principal of the UCWI , a past member of the Oxford University Chemistry Dept . and distinuguished himself serving as Science adviser to Lord Mountbatten in the Burma Campaign in World War 2 . Prof . Cedric Hassall gained his PhD degree in Microbiological Chemistry at Cambridge , England and was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the University College of the West Indies in 1947 . He was a founding Professor of the fledgling UCWI at which he delivered the first lecture in 1948 and supervised the first PhD , awarded in 1952 . He founded the student Chemical Society and was instrumental in establishing the Association of Science Teachers of Jamaica . Prof . Hassall possesses a long list of accolades and achievement . His contribution to the UCWI and Chemistry department in particular is invaluable . Mr . Philip Sherlock . B.A . was appointed Director of Extra Mural Studies at the University College with the status of Professor with effect from April 1st , 1947 . He had previously served numerous posts in education and social work , including Headmaster of Manchester Secondary School and later of Wolmer’s Boys ' School . He also served as Secretary of the Institute of Jamaica . His appointment to the teaching staff of the University College of the West Indies was met with great expectation and pride as he was the second appointee on the teaching staff and its first West Indian . He had previously shared in the planning and inception of the University through his work on the Irvine Committee . The Committee toured the West Indies on behalf of the British Government , getting evidence on the where and how to implement the University . He was therefore , so to speak , a founding father of the University even before his appointment to the teaching staff . Soon he became Dr . Philip Sherlock ; Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies . Before his appointment to the Physics faculty of the University’s Medical College , Dr . Bowen had served in the army , studied in the U.S . and taught in Africa and England before returning to Jamaica . At the time of his appointment he held a Master’s degree from the University of Colombia and was excited about higher education coming to the West Indies in the form of the University College . Dr . Bowen completed a PhD from Imperial College in London in 1949 with his thesis entitled "An investigation of the conditions necessary for the excitation of electronic energy levels of high quantum numbers.
