Description
The collection documents John Hearne's career as lecturer , journalist , writer and social critic from 1952-1994 . It consists of correspondence ; biographical papers ; newspaper clippings ; photographs ; audio cassettes and penciled manuscripts of books short stories and poems as well as articles for the Gleaner column "Your World and Mine " John Hearne was born in Montreal Canada on February 4 , 1926 but was brought up in Jamaica . He was educated at Jamaica College . After Jamaica College , John Hearne joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in World War II . In 1950 , he received a master's degree in English and Philosophy from the University of Edinburgh . That same year , he also earned a teaching degree from the University of London . While in London , he earned a living teaching and working on teleplays as well as novels . John Hearne returned to Jamaica in 1962 and became a resident tutor in Extramural Studies at the University of the West Indies . He was head of the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts from 1968 until he retired . In the late 1960s , John Hearne collaborated with Morris Cargill and together they produced three popular novels under the pseudonym John Morris . He was awarded the John Llewelyn Rhys Memorial Prize for Voices Under the Window in 1956 and the Silver Musgrave Medal from the Institute of Jamaica in 1964 . John Hearne was also adviser to Prime Minister Michael Manley and wrote extensively for the Jamaican Press .
