NOTES
JOSE MARTI
He may be described as the Apostle of Latin American revolution, constantly
referred to by the Cubani leaders as Apostol. He was both philosopher and
politician, completely dedicated to the democratic freedoms of a people and
championing the cause of the under-dog.
His many writings which he dedicated his entire life to bore two themes:
1. The right to freedom, Independence first from Spain and then as a
Republic from the dominance of the United States of America.
2. The rights of the workers - the forgotten masses were always
uppermost in his mind. He gave the priority to the suffering
multitudes rather than with the luxury to the few.
As a revolutionary, he inspired the thinkers of his time. To him there was
one Latin American family mound together by similar culture and by seeking after
Independence.
Jose Marti was of the calibre of that other great Liberator, Simon Bolivar
and here we have twin spirits, dedicated intellectual philosophers which was Marti
and the military genius and Latin American Liberator, who was Simon Bolivar.
We thus have the thinker and the soldier who inspired all the followers of
Latin American history and are largely responsible for the Independence of all
Latins in Central, South America and the Caribbean. Most of his writings focussed
on Cuba and Puerto Rico, and he waged constant war of words for the liberation.
Josi Marti was the intellectual radical, the revolutionary, he stood for
fundamental changes and sought that these changes should be placed in the
Constitutions of the free Republics. He gave his life to strive far.
Josi Marti died as he lived a heroes death on battlefield fighting the fight for
Independence as staunch enemies of imperialism and colonialism were his sworn
enemies. His spirit still lives wherever there is a thirst for freedom throughout
Latin American.
